Private Jet Charter to Key West and the Florida Keys: What to Know

Few destinations feel as far away as the Florida Keys, and few are as easy to reach by private jet. Skipping airline connections and landing a few minutes from Old Town makes a quick getaway even better.

But the Keys have quirks: limited airports, busy peak weekends, weather and some practical constraints. Here is what to know before you book private jet charter to Key West and the Florida Keys.

Airport Options in the Keys

Key West International (EYW)

Key West International is the main gateway for the southernmost Keys. It handles commercial airlines and general aviation, and it sits only a short drive from Old Town, Duval Street, the waterfront and many resorts.

  • Best for: most visitors to Key West
  • Runway: About 4,800 feet, which is workable for light and midsize jets. Large-cabin aircraft may face weight or temperature limits. Confirm with your operator.
  • Things to check: parking availability on busy weekends, handling fees and whether customs is available if you are arriving from abroad

Florida Keys Marathon International (MTH)

Marathon sits in the middle of the island chain and works well if your destination is the Middle Keys, such as Marathon, Islamorada or Key Colony Beach, or if you plan to drive or boat to Key West.

  • Best for: the Middle Keys, and as a less congested alternate to Key West
  • Runway: About 5,000 feet, which suits many light and midsize jets
  • Things to check: FBO services and ground transport availability

Upper Keys and Private Fields

Some communities, such as Ocean Reef on North Key Largo, have private airfields that require prior permission. Many Upper Keys visitors fly into Miami-area airports such as Opa-locka (OPF) or Miami Executive (TMB) and drive south.

How Long Does It Take?

Flights are short from most of the Southeast and East Coast, often under two and a half hours from the Carolinas, and under an hour from Miami and Tampa. From the Northeast, expect roughly three hours or a bit more depending on aircraft and winds.

Which Aircraft Works Best?

Because EYW's runway is limited, most charters to Key West use light, midsize and super-midsize jets. These aircraft get you in and out comfortably and can usually fit a family or small group with luggage.

  • Light jets (4 to 7 passengers): economical for couples and small families. The HondaJet and Phenom 300 are popular for shorter routes within the region. Compare them in our HondaJet Elite II vs Phenom 300 guide.
  • Midsize and super-midsize jets (7 to 9 passengers): more cabin space and range for groups and longer legs from the Northeast or Midwest.
  • Large-cabin jets: often possible but may be weight-limited on a hot day, and may require a fuel stop or alternate airport strategy. Plan with your operator.

Best Time to Go and When It Gets Busy

  • Peak season (December through April): warm, dry weather and high demand. Hotels, airports and charter availability tighten.
  • Holidays and long weekends: book early, because ramps and rooms fill quickly.
  • Major events: Key West hosts events such as Fantasy Fest in late October and various fishing and sailing weekends. Parking and handling can become tight around them.
  • Summer: warm and humid with afternoon storms. Fewer crowds, but flexible planning helps.
  • Hurricane season (June through November): plan flexible dates and consider travel protection.

Practical Tips

  1. Confirm parking before you book. EYW's ramp can fill up on peak weekends. Ask your operator whether the aircraft will stay in Key West or reposition to another airport while you are there.
  2. Plan for weight limits. Heat, baggage and fuel can affect how much a jet can carry from a shorter runway. Share your passenger and bag count early.
  3. Check noise and operating rules. Some airports have restrictions or preferred procedures.
  4. Arrange ground transport in advance. Key West is compact, but rental cars, golf carts, pedicabs and ride services run short at peak times.
  5. Consider a boat or charter excursion. From Key West you can reach the Dry Tortugas, flats fishing and snorkeling spots. Book them early.
  6. Bring paperwork for international legs. If you are continuing to the Bahamas, Cuba or elsewhere, make sure customs and permit requirements are handled.

What Does It Cost?

Pricing depends on aircraft type, distance, peak-date demand, repositioning, and handling or parking fees. As a general guide, light jets are the most economical for short hops, and larger aircraft cost more per hour but carry more people. Peak winter dates and holiday weekends often carry higher pricing. Ask for an all-in quote that includes taxes, fuel, handling and any repositioning.

Sample Trips

  • Weekend couple's getaway from the Carolinas: light jet, depart Friday morning, return Sunday evening
  • Family vacation from the Northeast: midsize jet, direct to EYW for a week
  • Fishing weekend to Marathon: light or midsize jet, leave early and be on the water by lunch
  • Corporate retreat: super-midsize jet with extra baggage capacity
