Flying Private to Hilton Head: Airports, FBOs, and Golf Course Access

Hilton Head Island is one of the Southeast's premier golf and beach destinations, and flying private is the way to arrive. The difference comes down to location: the right airport puts you minutes from Sea Pines and Harbour Town instead of nearly an hour away. This guide covers the island's two airport options, the aircraft that fit each, and how to land closest to the course.

Your Flight Desk advisor will pair the right aircraft and airport to your trip and the day's conditions. Here is how it works.

The On-Island Airport: Hilton Head (HXD)

The Hilton Head Island Airport (HXD) sits in the middle of the island, which makes it the strong default whenever your aircraft fits. From HXD, Sea Pines and Harbour Town are roughly 20 to 25 minutes by car, and the major resorts and hotel zones are all close by. Signature Flight Support operates the FBO, with direct ramp access, ground transportation, and full passenger services.

The key detail is the runway. At 4,300 feet, HXD comfortably handles light and midsize jets, and super-midsize jets with appropriate performance planning. On hot summer days with a full fuel load the numbers matter, which is why we pair the aircraft to the actual weather, weight, and fuel requirements rather than published runway length alone. For heavy and ultra-long-range jets, the island airport is not the right fit, and that is where Savannah comes in.

The Alternative: Savannah/Hilton Head International (SAV)

For larger aircraft, longer transcontinental trips, or international arrivals where customs throughput matters, Savannah/Hilton Head International (SAV) is the alternative. SAV has a runway over 9,000 feet, handles every business-jet category including heavy and ultra-long-range, offers full U.S. Customs, and carries deep FBO services as Gulfstream Aerospace's home airport. The tradeoff is the drive: SAV is roughly 45 minutes from the island.

Airport Code Runway Best For
Hilton Head Island HXD 4,300 ft On-island, minutes from the resorts; light through super-midsize jets
Savannah/Hilton Head International SAV 9,000+ ft All aircraft including heavy and ultra-long-range, full U.S. Customs, about 45 minutes away

Choosing the Right Aircraft

For most Hilton Head trips, a light or midsize jet into HXD is the sweet spot. A light jet like the Phenom 300 or Citation CJ3 is efficient for regional hops, while a midsize like the Citation Excel/XLS adds cabin and luggage room. Super-midsize jets such as the Challenger 350 or Gulfstream G280 can use HXD with performance planning, and they fly into SAV without restriction. If you are flying a heavy or ultra-long-range jet, plan on SAV. Not sure which size fits your group? Golf Course Access

Hilton Head is a golf destination first, and HXD is the closest airfield to its best courses. Harbour Town Golf Links at Sea Pines, home of the PGA Tour's RBC Heritage each April, is the marquee draw, with Palmetto Dunes and the island's other resort courses minutes away. Golf weekends and tournament weeks drive the heaviest demand, so book early, and keep an eye out for empty leg flights, which are common around golf season.
