Private aviation is in our backyard. The Jet Guys is based in Upstate South Carolina, and Greenville-Spartanburg is the market we know best. Whether you are flying out for a quick regional trip, heading to Florida or the Caribbean, or connecting to a major event, the Upstate offers more private aviation options than most travelers realize. This guide covers the airports, the right aircraft, and where Upstate flyers go most, so your next trip from home starts smoothly.

Your Airport Options in the Upstate
Most travelers think of GSP as the commercial airport, but the Upstate actually offers four solid private aviation choices, each with its own strengths:
For most trips the choice comes down to two things: how close you want to be to downtown Greenville, and how large an aircraft you are flying. Greenville-Spartanburg International in Greer offers the region's longest runway at 11,001 feet, on-site U.S. Customs for international trips, and full-service FBOs in Cerulean Aviation, whose general aviation terminal was expanded and reopened in 2025, and Stevens Aviation. It is the default for heavy and ultra-long-range aircraft. Greenville Downtown (GMU), served by Vantage Aviation, is the busiest general aviation airport in South Carolina and sits just minutes from downtown, which makes it the favorite for light and midsize jets. Donaldson Field (GYH) south of the city adds an 8,000-foot runway with the Donaldson Jet Center and AvServe FBOs, while Spartanburg Downtown Memorial (SPA) is the natural choice for the Spartanburg side of the region.
Choosing the Right Aircraft
The right aircraft depends on where you are headed. For short regional hops, a light jet like the Phenom 300 or Citation CJ3 is efficient and quick. For longer trips with more cabin and luggage, a midsize like the Citation Excel/XLS or a super-midsize like the Challenger 350 or Gulfstream G280 covers transcontinental range. For larger groups or international travel, a heavy jet such as the Falcon 2000LX gives you the cabin and the legs. Where Upstate Flyers Go
From the Upstate, the most popular private routes fall into a few buckets:
Quick regional escapes. Charleston and Hilton Head for the coast, or Nashville for a weekend.
Florida and the islands. Miami, Palm Beach, and the Bahamas via Nassau are perennial favorites, especially in winter.
Business and city trips. New York for meetings, or Las Vegas for conferences and events.
Golf and game days. The Upstate is a golf hub. Our Southeast golf destinations guide covers the best fly-in courses, and our SEC football guide is built for South Carolina game-day travel.
Why Fly Private from the Upstate
The alternative to flying private from home is usually a drive to Charlotte or Atlanta for a commercial connection, plus the lines, layovers, and lost time that come with it. Flying private from GSP, GMU, GYH, or SPA means no TSA lines, direct ramp access, and departure on your schedule, often saving half a day in each direction. For trips where time and privacy matter, the math is hard to beat.
