Each spring, Spoleto Festival USA turns Charleston into the country's premier performing arts destination. The 2026 festival ran May 22 through June 7, filling the city's historic theaters, churches, and outdoor venues with more than 120 performances. If you experienced it this year, or you are already thinking about 2027, flying private is the easiest way to land in the heart of the Lowcountry and skip the logistics. A Quick Look at Spoleto 2026
Spoleto Festival USA is the nation's preeminent performing arts festival, running 17 days and nights each spring across opera, theater, dance, and chamber, orchestral, choral, and jazz music. The 2026 season, shaped by an America 250 theme marking 250 years of American history, brought more than 120 performances to venues across historic downtown Charleston, alongside the companion Piccolo Spoleto festival. Best Airports for a Charleston Spoleto Trip
Charleston has two main private aviation options, plus a smaller third:
Charleston International (CHS), about 12 miles northwest of downtown, is the region's hub. Its long runways handle everything from light jets to heavy and ultra-long-range aircraft, it has on-site U.S. Customs for international arrivals, and it offers multiple FBOs including Atlantic Aviation and Signature, with roughly a 15 to 20 minute transfer to the historic district. Charleston Executive (JZI) on Johns Island, about 8 miles southwest, is the quieter, more convenient option for light through super-midsize jets, and it is the closest field to Kiawah and Seabrook if you are combining Spoleto with a golf stay. Atlantic Aviation runs the FBO there, and international arrivals route through CHS since JZI does not have on-site customs. For smaller jets and turboprops on the Mount Pleasant side, Mount Pleasant Regional (LRO) is a third option.
Recommended Aircraft
Charleston is reachable from most of the East Coast and Midwest in a light or midsize jet, and from anywhere in a larger cabin. For regional trips, a light jet like the Phenom 300 or Citation CJ3 is efficient and can use either airport. For more cabin and luggage, a midsize Citation Excel/XLS or a super-midsize Challenger 350 works well, and both fit JZI. For transcontinental or international travel, a heavy jet such as the Falcon 2000LX flies into CHS without restriction. Not sure which size fits? Planning Tips for Spoleto 2027
Book early. Spoleto draws visitors from around the world, and downtown lodging and FBO slots fill up well in advance. The earlier you lock in, the better your options.
Stay central, fly smart. Most venues are walkable within the historic district, where parking is limited. Flying private and arranging ground transport from the FBO removes the biggest day-of headache.
Combine it with golf. Charleston is minutes from Kiawah Island's Ocean Course and other top courses. See our 10 Best Golf Destinations to Fly Private in the Southeast for ideas.
Watch the dates. Spoleto and the companion Piccolo Spoleto run concurrently, typically late May into early June. Confirm the 2027 dates before you plan.
